α-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein that is produced by the fetus’s liver and yolk sac during development. It is also present in the blood of adults, but its level is much lower than in newborns. AFP can also be elevated in some non-cancerous conditions such as liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and chronic viral hepatitis.
