Rapid detection of Chikungunya IgG/IgM is a side-flow chromatography immunoassay used to qualitatively detect IgG/IgM antibodies to Chikungunya virus in human serum, plasma, or whole blood. It is intended to be used as a screening test and an adjunct to the diagnosis of chikungunya virus infection. Any reactive specimen using a rapid test for Chikungunya IgG/IgM must be confirmed using alternative testing methods and clinical findings. Chikungunya is a rare viral infection spread through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. It is characterized by rash, fever, and severe joint pain (arthralgia) and usually lasts 3 to 7 days. The name is derived from the word Makonde, which means “bent” and refers to the bent posture that develops as a result of the arthritic symptoms of the disease. It occurs during the rainy season in tropical parts of the world, mainly in Africa, Southeast Asia, southern India and Pakistan. These symptoms are often clinically indistinguishable from those observed in dengue fever. In fact, dual infections of dengue and chikungunya have been reported in India. Unlike dengue, hemorrhagic manifestations are relatively rare, and in most cases, the disease is a self-limiting febrile disease. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between dengue and CHIK infection clinically. CHIK diagnoses based on serological analysis and viral isolation in mice or tissue cultures. IgM immunoassays are the most practical laboratory test. The rapid Chikungunya IgG/IgM test uses recombinant antigens from its structural proteins to detect IgG/IgM anti-CHIK in a patient’s serum or plasma within 20 minutes. The test can be performed by an untrained or minimally skilled person without cumbersome laboratory equipment.
