Filariasis IgG/IgM Rapid Test Kit is a side-flow immunoassay for simultaneous detection and differentiation of IgG and IgM anti-lymphatic filariasis parasites (Bacillus bankroft and Bifidobacterium malayi) in human serum, plasma, or whole blood. The test is intended to be used as a screening test and as an adjunct to diagnosing lymphatic filaria parasite infection. Any filariasis reactive specimen that uses the IgG/IgM combination for rapid testing must be confirmed using other testing methods. Lymphatic filariasis, known as elephantiasis, is mainly caused by Nepenthes bankcrofty and Bacillus maleae and affects about 120 million people in more than 80 countries. The disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, in which a yellowish turn sucked out of an infected human subject develops into stage III larvae. Often, repeated and prolonged exposure to infected larvae is required to determine human infection. A definitive parasitological diagnosis is evidence of slight yellowing in a blood sample. However, this gold standard test is limited by night blood collection requirements and a lack of sufficient sensitivity. Tests for circulating antigens are commercially available. It was of limited use to Bankcrofty. In addition, microfilariasis and antigenemia develop months to years after exposure. Antibody testing provides an early way to detect filamentous parasitic infection. The presence of IgM in the parasite antigen indicates current infection, while IgG corresponds to late infection or past infection. In addition, the identification of the conserved antigen allows for the application of the “pansiloma” test. The use of recombinant proteins eliminates cross-reactivity with individuals suffering from other parasitic diseases. The combined IgG/IgM rapid test for filariasis uses conserved recombinant antigens to detect both IgG and IgM for Nepenthes bankcrofti and Bacillus maleae parasites without the limitation of specimen collection.
