Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus (a virus that can be transmitted from animals to humans) and can also be transmitted to humans through contaminated food or directly from person to person. Nipah virus causes a range of symptoms in infected people, including asymptomatic (subclinical) infections, acute respiratory disease and fatal encephalitis.
