A tumor marker refers to a substance that can be found in the blood, urine, or tissue of a person with cancer. Tumor markers are usually proteins or other substances that are produced by the cancer cells themselves or by the body in response to the presence of cancer. The detection and measurement of tumor markers can be used as a tool for cancer diagnosis, monitoring the progress of cancer treatment, and detecting cancer recurrence.
